Kim’s Story

Site created on January 9, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On January 8, our dear friend Kim Miller went to the emergency room with a severe headache.  She was diagnosed with a large brain tumor above her left eye.  Kim was immediately admitted to Seton Hospital and subsequent tests revealed a second tumor.  At present, it is not believed that the tumors are malignant.  She is hospitalized as she receives medication to reduce the swelling.  Her medical team has decided to operate to remove the larger tumor at 8:00am on Friday, January 11.  Following the surgery, we expect Kim to be in ICU for a few days followed by several more days of hospitalization.  If all goes well, she will be able to return to her home, but will need a companion for at least the first week to monitor for seizures.  As you may expect, Kim is maintaining her trademark positive spirit through all this, but we know she will need support and care for some time.  First, she needs your prayers and good energy.  Second, there is a GO FUND ME page set up by Grace Pettis that will help Kim with her financial needs.  (Click on WAYS TO HELP above for more information)  Then, we will all look for the ways we can be helpful during her recovery.  Thanks for checking in here, leaving Kim words of encouragement and signing up for updates.  We'll keep this site going with new information as it is available.  -- Dodee Crockett

Newest Update

Journal entry by Dodee Crockett

Two months ago I had brain surgery. I came home to heal with the Herculean notion I was walking away with a wicked scar and a bad hairdo. Turns out, I’m still on the trail.

Unfortunately, my tumors were not benign. I start radiation therapy this week. The good news is, the treatments will give me time. It may be no fun for a few months, but there will be time ahead for more music, exploring coral reefs, thought-provoking conversations, and your good company. I’ll take it!

I’m honored by you. The silver linings of this ordeal are the lessons learned by your goodwill. Your kindness has taught me kindness. Your generosity has altered me and given me the peace of heart and mind I need for whatever lies ahead.

So many of you have reached out asking how to help. I’ve been blessed to have close friends with me every day to get me where I need to go for my medical treatments and to stay with me while I have been and will be unable to drive. Several of you have been kind to get me out in the world and brighten my days. Thanks to all of you who have taken me to concerts, to get a pedicure, out for meal, and visited to share your songs.

What I need going forward is to continue that contact with friends and community. I also need funding to meet my obligations during this year of treatment and discovering my “new normal.”

Thanks for checking on me through CaringBridge https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kimmiller4. Dodee Crockett wants me to remind you that donations to CaringBridge don’t come to me, though they do help others who need the site. My GoFundMe page is the best way to support financially. https://bit.ly/2Fdqglj

Perhaps my most important discovery is this—we are never alone. I’m humbled throughout this journey with you.
