Kevin’s Story

Site created on May 9, 2018

In June 2016, Kevin suffered an aortic dissection, requiring emergent open heart surgery. As many of you know, Kevin surviving that day was truly a miracle! Recently, they discovered Kevin has a connective tissue disorder, causing his aorta to enlarge, which will require additional major surgeries by a specialist in NYC.

On May 13th, Kevin and Christy will be traveling to New York City for the first of 2 surgeries later that week.  In the first surgery they will graft his aortic arch and his entire descending aorta. After that Kevin and Christy will stay in NYC for a few weeks as Kevin recovers before he can travel.    After a few months of recovery, they will travel back for the 2nd surgery.

These past few months have been filled with many ups and downs as they prepare to head to NYC.  The emotions that accompany walking through this surgery again and all it will mean, has been a  test of faith and courage for the whole family, but especially Kevin and Christy.  It is in those moments of uncertainty that God has boldly wrapped them in his peace and love through their family, friends and community.  The outpouring of prayers, encouragement, meals, financial support and so many other acts of kindness has not only been overwhelming it has helped them to stand solid in their faith.  They have been surrounded by so much love and support it is hard to even put into words what it has meant to them.

There is a bible verse that is simple but so so powerful.  I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13  I love this because when we face trials and the ups and downs of life,  it reminds us that we are not alone and that Christ is right there with us giving us the strength to walk through it.  As we have watched all that Kevin and the family has been through, their resilience and strength is definitely a testimony of their faith and the strength God has given them to walk this next part of fixing Kevin's heart.

This site will be the easiest way to communicate with everyone updates from NYC and once home to share how Kevin is doing.  It will also help Christy focus on Kevin and what he needs in those first weeks...and lets be honest as a nurse she will be making sure he is getting the very best care!  It is here we can share our words of encouragement, thoughts, prayers etc. with them through this journey.

Thank you again for all the love, support and prayers that you have so boldly shared with the Clarke family.

Blessings Everyone,
Tracey

Newest Update

Journal entry by Tracey Steivang

Good Morning,
Today is another snow day for our kids up here in the twin cities.  We have had 7 days off out of the last 10 school days.  My kids have never seen anything like this...they have had only 3 or 4 total their whole life! Numerous days like this in a row have everyone scrambling and completely out of sorts as a couple of these were not expected..at all...when it's only 6 inches of snow.  ONLY! #boldnorth Usually we are too tough to cancel for that, but the -60 degrees Polar Vortex for days well that's expected.

This morning when we were adjusting yet again, don't get me wrong this has been a blast for my kids, I was thinking about how last February when this all started it was an unexpected storm that knocked Kevin and Christy's life into a literal vortex that was surreal.  It was supposed to be one surgery to repair a new aneurysm that was found.  As you all know, it became a epic storm of unknowns and extremes that caused multiple surgeries, a stroke and countless other issues that Kevin has had to endure and not to mention financially what this has meant for them.

But yesterday there was a calm instead of a storm...a beautiful message from NYC.  Kevin had a follow up scan and the results were sent to NYC and confirmed by Dr. Patel....wait for it....it was
NORMAL!!!!
He will have another scan in 3 months and return to NYC in June to have his 6 mo. check up with dr. Patel.  This is amazing news...the news Kevin and Christy were praying for and holding their breath about.  Ever since last February when they discovered the aneurysm, each time they received news it had been a continuation of an unknown storm pulling them into a surreal vortex.  But yesterday it was a giant relief to hear the words NORMAL!  Kevin was also put back on his coumadin yesterday which also reinforces that everything is good.  Since returning from NYC a month ago, Kevin has slowly been recovering. This last trauma and the surgery before that definitely took the biggest toll on Kevin with losing so much weight and muscle.  So he is in PT 3x a week and slowly getting his strength back.  His appetite is also coming back which will help him to gain weight and increase strength too. Which has all been very slow.  Slow and steady will win this race for sure!

Once again all the love, support and prayers that have covered and supported Kevin and Christy can not be measured or enough gratitude ever expressed.  God is so good and I am so grateful as I type this post to have ONLY amazing news to report. Please continue to pray as Kevin recovers and that he would continue to gain weight and strength.  Pray for Christy as she continues to recover from her foot surgery and her nasty fall in NYC that has added complications in her healing of both feet and lots of pain. (Seriously these two!!) Pray for both of them as they navigate this long healing journey and all that it means.
Blessings, Tracey
