Welcome to our CaringBridge website.  We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.  On June 1, 2021 Ken suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and was flown to St. Charles Hospital in Bend.  This is his story of recovery.  We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kelly Ware

I've been working on this update for the better part of a week now, hopefully this time I can actually get it published.

We go home tomorrow, 7/13! RIO has been amazing and he's come so far. There is still a very long way to go but he has the building blocks in place to grow from. He has gained strength and endurance all the way around, physically and mentally. He still requires pretty significant aid to walk but each day is a little stronger and a little better.  He doesn't have much if any feeling in his leg or arm which complicates things particularly his trust in his leg.  I won't be able to walk with him for a while yet. We tried this morning and he just needs too much assistance in case his leg buckles and the last thing we need is for both of us to be stuck on the floor!

He is getting a lot of speech therapy, which isn't just speech. They are the brain mechanics. He does lots of brain exercises and is getting better with his memory and awareness. He still has some confusion but it is much, much better just over the last few days. The speech sessions seem to wear him out more than PT and OT and he usually has a nap afterward.

At home he will have home health therapy and we have an assortment of exercises and therapies to do outside of the formal therapy.  We will have to work visits around those as well as not overwhelming him. His care team is recommending only a couple visitors at a time every few days to start with to see how it goes.
