Newest Update

Journal entry by Stacey Titchenal

This phrase is true in more ways than one this year. As Kenny continues to heal--both physically and emotionally--he is very much looking forward to a fresh start and a return to his new normal. Although not all of his visible scars and injuries could be repaired before the end of the year like he was hoping for, his community continued to rally behind him to ensure he still had a wonderful holiday season! He enjoyed two extended visits from his Gigi and Papa, lots of quality time with friends, and—now that he’s no longer on liver precautions—a ride or two on his bike with as much contentment as he had before the accident.

Jane is back to work full time while Kenny is doing a phased return to school. The plan is for him to start with three days a week and gradually increase to five. He starts next week, so wish him luck! Jane has morning and afternoon transportation arranged, though she says that Kenny is very eager to be back to his independent routine.

Kenny had a root canal over winter break to remove the front tooth that was lodged in the roof of his mouth. They were cautiously optimistic they could salvage it, but they found that it had a fracture and ultimately decided it was too compromised. Unfortunately, he won’t have his flipper put in until the end of February. As far as the rest of his care and recovery goes, he has three follow-up appointments this month: One with the psychiatrist who oversaw his case, one with the pediatric surgical team, and one with the ophthalmologist.

Still no major updates regarding the claim or the driver. The cops did not find evidence to pursue a criminal case and as we all know too well, any time you’re dealing with insurance it can be a brutally drawn-out process. Pray for patience, grace, and swiftness as Jane continues to navigate those headache-ridden waters.

I don’t think any of us knew what to expect that first night Kenny was in the ICU, but it was certainly nowhere near where he is just 7 weeks later. Kids are tremendously resilient—both physically and emotionally—and Kenny is proof of that. While there are still a few hurdles to overcome, I’m confident that he will continue along towards a bright and full recovery.

Thank you for your ongoing support and for keeping Jane and Kenny in your thoughts and prayers ❤️
