Kenna’s Story

Site created on January 1, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Kenna first started feeling sick December 17th. She seemed to have a typical flu bug with the exception of a higher than normal fever. Kenna first visited the ER  on the 19th for us to be told that she just had a stomach virus. Other than that there was not a thing wrong with her. Within the next couple of days most of her symptoms resolved except her fever and some on and off leg pain. A second trip to the ER provided very different results.  Within a week Kenna had developed pneumonia, fluid in her abdomen, and an white cell count of over 18,000! She was quickly transferred to another hospital Pediatric ICU. After many tests Kenna was found to be septic from a MRSA infection. Things seemed to be looking up from here, with a cause the doctors were able to treat her. Kenna slowly but surely improved, to the point she was able to move to a regular Pediatric room! They said her most of her ailments were resolved and with continued antibiotics and breathing treatments she was on the mend! However, her high fever persisted. Within a couple of days they found the infection had returned, this time in her heart. Kenna was again transferred to anther hospital, this time to a Pediatric Cardiology ICU.  Kenna is currently in St Louis being treated for her heart infection and lung condition. She is sedated and intubated and fluid around her heart is actively being drained. We will try to keep you all update on Kenna's journey and appreciate all your prayers and well wishes!

Journal entry by Eric Van Kirk

Hey everyone,

As some of you know we have made it home! Kenna is doing great! She is in a wheel chair for a while until that leg heals but she is doing good!
Sorry that it took me a while to update, it got crazy at the hospital and then I was just excited to be headed home.
Thank you all for your continued prayers and support!
