Kelly’s Story

Site created on December 23, 2021

Welcome to our Caring Bridge website for Kelly (Crowley) Severson. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support, kind words and generosity.

Background
On Thursday, December 2, Kelly went to the ER via ambulance and was admitted to the Hospital in Wyoming, MN, with a severe case of COVID pneumonia from Covid-19. She was given various forms of heavy-duty oxygen support. The next day she was admitted to the ICU. The first few days in the ICU she made some improvements. Then Kelly’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was put in paralysis, sedated (placed in a medically induced coma) and put on a ventilator on Wednesday, December 8th. That Thursday, her kidneys failed, so she was airlifted to St. John’s Hospital who had the equipment and expertise to save and maintain Kelly’s life. Kelly and the incredible ICU team fought long and hard against this terrible disease, but her body was exhausted and unable to recover. She passed away on December 29, 2021, with Shawn and her sister Tricia by her side. She leaves a gaping hole in the hearts of her children, her family and everyone who knew her.

How You Can Help
•          GoFundMe = After insurance, Shawn is looking at tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills and other expenses. It is unclear when he will be able to return to work as he is still recovering and now left to raise his children without the love of his life by his side. We hope to alleviate the financial burden so that he can focus solely on the kids and their wellbeing, as they adjust to life without Kelly. Any help is greatly appreciated to get their family through this terrible time. To donate, click on the “Ways to Help” icon in the purple bar on this page and then select the “View GoFundMe Fundraiser” option. This will take you directly to Kelly’s GoFundMe site where you can donate.

•          Meal Train – Meal Calendar = If you would like to bring over meals for Shawn and the kids, Meal Train is an interactive calendar where you can select which date works best for you to bring them a meal. To learn more about how Meal Train works and/or sign up, click on the “Ways to Help” icon in the purple bar on this page and then select the “Visit Meal Train Page” option. From there you can learn more about delivery information and sign up on the calendar for when to bring a meal.

In Loving Memory of Kelly Anne Severson (Crowley)

Born July 21, 1972 – Died December 29, 2021

Kelly Anne Severson’s life was cut short at 49 years of age. Kelly died from COVID complications on December 29, 2021, at St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, MN while her husband, Shawn Severson, and her sister, Tricia Tempel held her hands. She was born on July 21, 1972, in St. Paul, MN and was adopted as an infant by her loving parents Patrick and Joan Crowley.

Kelly was a graduate of Hill Murray High School class of 1990 and has been lifelong friends with many of her classmates. She loved children and was a nanny for much of her life before having children of her own. She graduated from Aveda Institute, was a licensed cosmetologist, and worked at Danabri Day Spa for 15 years where she made many dear friends. Kelly married the love of her life, Shawn Severson, on August 20, 2010. Kelly’s dream of being a mom came true when they had a son, Drake, and twin daughters, Arabella and Camille. Kelly enjoyed cooking, gardening, crafting, biking, outdoor activities, napping, and snuggling her children. She was a Vikings fan and loved spending time with her immediate and extended family. Some of her and her family’s fondest memories were spending time together at her parent’s cabin on Sylvan Lake in the Brainerd Lakes Area where they had many family friends. Kelly was a devoted mom to her young children and cherished every moment with them. She was active in her children’s school, Taylors Falls Elementary, and made many close friendships there. She was dedicated in supporting her children, driving them to soccer, dance, swimming, lacrosse, football, hockey, and every other sport and activity in which they were involved. She was her children’s biggest fan and also gave the loudest cheers for all of the other kids on the team. Kelly was a “Hockey Mom” to all of her hockey family in the Chisago Lakes Hockey Association.

We cannot begin to express our gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and generosity that has blessed our grieving families and provided much-needed comfort during this dark time. Hand-delivered meals nourished bodies and hearts. Donations helped ease immense financial burdens. Angels’ wings on hockey helmets honored love and community. Calls and cards grieved alongside us, ensuring us that we are not alone and that Kelly will always be remembered and loved by those who were privileged to know her.

The Reverend Colleen Woodley, a dear longtime friend of Kelly and the Crowley family, will officiate at both services.

Kelly was preceded in death by grandparents John and Geraldine Crowley and Lyle and Ruth Wellner. Survived by husband Shawn, and children Drake (age 10), Arabella (age 7), and Camille (age 7), parents Patrick and Joan Crowley, sister Tricia Tempel (Michael), father and mother-in-law Sheldon and Sylvia Severson, sisters-in-law Shirleen Ekstrum (Tom), Sarah McLellan (Mike), brother-in-law Scott Severson (Tonya), and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
