Kelly’s Story

Site created on May 22, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Our beloved mother, KRM, was taken to the emergency room on 5/11/2020 due to extreme discomfort and difficulty walking up our driveway and catching her breath the previous day. During a CAT scan, they found multiple masses throughout the abdominal area including two masses on the liver, a spinal mass and one on the right kidney. They conduced a bi-opsy on  5/13 on one of the liver masses.

On 5/21 she was diagnosed with Metastatic High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma, Stage 4 from the Sparrow cancer center. Her file was sent to U of M (per her request) and met with her Oncology Specialist on 5/27. She began chemo on 6/3 at U of M in the cancer center. We will be posting updates as we go throughout the journey.

Journal entry by Theodora McKinney

So, my friends - 2020 gave me one more kick in the ass as it was heading out the door. Turns out I have a new "lesion" on my spine. So I started back on chemo Thursday - all 7+ hours of it. Also starting radiation in a week or two so that is apparently something to look forward to as well! The good news is I'm not the least bit fazed by any of this. I'm strong, I know what I'm in for, I'm not nearly as sick or in as much pain as I was in May, and I know what meds finally worked. I also felt like I cheated by not having as much chemo as I was originally scheduled to have. So all in all, this is a little wrinkle in the greater scheme of things. But there goes my darn hair again!  Much love and gratitude to all of you for your well wishes, prayers and emotional (and occasionally physical) support. And for those of you who know my family, please keep them in your hearts as well. As Beloved Officer Dave told me, “You don’t have cancer; we have cancer. We’re all in this together.” He is so right!
