Journal entry by Kelly Marsh Hidalgo —
Today I went to my follow up appointment with the surgeon and received my pathology report. I am happy to say that they were only able to find microscopic traces of where the tumor was so there was an almost complete pathalogical response to the chemo. The lymph nodes they tested came back negative, and they were able to remove the tumor with clear margins. So as of today I am breast cancer free!!!
There will still be a few more things in front of me. At the end of January I will have a preventative hysterectomy, to avoid the possibility of ovarian cancer in the future. I will still be going for immunotherapy infusions through June with the oncologist and will need reconstructive surgery in 6-12 months. However...I truly feel like the worst and hardest parts of this journey are behind me. I have climbed and made it to the top of the mountain and I am taking in the view before I climb down the other side.
I will be forever grateful to my friends, family, coworkers and neighbors for all the love and support they sent, and continue to send, my way. Cancer gives you a rare opportunity to really see the good in everyone. I am entering 2021 a new person and learned so much about myself in 2020, that while it was a tough year I can't call it a "bad" one. 2020 really made me grow and appreciate my life. I am thankful.
