Discovery-
On January 4,2021 I got in a car accident and totaled my vehicle (RIP Ruby). The
following week, I went to urgent care because I was still having bad
aches and pains. They told me I had whiplash, and I was prescribed
some muscle relaxers. The next day, I was about to take a shower, when
I noticed a lump in my left breast. Immediately, I went to urgent
care. The doctor felt the lump, but assumed it was a welt or bruise
caused from the car accident. As a precaution, she scheduled an ultrasound and a mammogram for the next week on January 20th.

During the testing on January 20th, the doctors were inconclusive on what the lump was on my breast, so they decided to do a biopsy. During the
ultrasound-led biopsy, they inspected my lymph nodes in my left armpit, as they were swollen. The doctor did a biopsy of the mass on my left breast and of my inflamed lymph nodes in my left armpit. The results, I was told, would take a day.

On January 22, 2021 I got a call diagnosing me with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (breast cancer). The next few hours went by as a blur. Floods of texts and calls from family and friends wishing their concerns and condolences. Endless amounts of tears. Eventually, with sarcasm and humor, we all pulled ourselves together.

Humor and sarcasm is exactly how I plan to turn this horrible situation, into a bearable one.
I'm doing as good as a 22-year-old gal with boob cancer can get.
I appreciate your well wishes and will keep everyone updated as the process continues. DJ and Megan will most likely post my journal updates for me as I apparently have quite the busy schedule.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Megan Earls

Quick update on Kaylah.  She is now officially halfway done with her hormonal chemo, and the oncologist said she should be finished up around June.  She is on track to get her final reconstructive surgery in March, however her plastic surgeon is on maternity leave from February until May.   There is a possibility that Kaylah could get in sooner but that would involve going to a different doctor and potentially a different location.   Kaylah had her seventh round of chemo last week and was fine for the most part until the night after.   She got up around 10 PM to go upstairs and get a bottle of water and felt really dizzy.   After she sat down for a second she felt fine and continued upstairs and fainted in the kitchen.   Mayo was not 100% certain as to why she fainted, whether it be her continued heart issues or if it had something to do with chemo or the day before.  Nevertheless Kaylah came to and felt fine so she went back to bed (and didn’t wake anyone up or tell anyone until the next morning, to her parents disagreement).

She has been dealing with a pretty intense headache the last couple days but didn’t think anything of it, and if anything thought it was Covid but her test came back negative.   After contacting Mayo and telling them that her headache had lasted around a week they became concerned that she hit her head when she fainted and was concussed.  Kaylah went in Friday for a couple of tests including a CT of her brain,  which confirmed she indeed has a mild concussion. The doctors think she lost consciousness before she hit her head in the kitchen, so she doesn’t remember. She is doing fine and just trying to take it easy.

The end of this month in general has been hard on her, as 22 January marked her one-year anniversary of getting diagnosed with cancer.   We are so grateful for everyone who reaches out to our family and continues to support us
