Newest Update

Journal entry by Kay Fletcher

Update from Kay and Steve’s daughter Carol.

Steve has reached from the beyond and given me a sign that he has met up with my late husband Andrew to get me to run a half marathon. Some backstory: I had already known that I wanted to run a long distance race as soon as Steve passed because I wanted to feel what he felt during those moments and therefore, somehow, feel closer to him. I have four dear college girlfriends that reunite once a year for a long weekend to reconnect. this year the girls were looking into North Carolina as a destination in general because none of us have ever been there. Sunday, December 1st, conversation broke out via group text messaging surrounding the topic of running, Daphanee Sent us a selfie of her and her daughter after they had just finished a run. When I announced to them that I had made a goal for myself to run a marathon in Steve’s memory, the idea started to develop that maybe with everybody’s fitness goals, that perhaps we could combine our annual girls weekend with a half marathon destination. I googled “North Carolina half marathon” and the first result that came up (the only result in North Carolina) was on Steve’s birthday, April 18, 2020. Coincidentally, it was also a half marathon originating at Kitty Hawk, the birthplace of flight, ode to my late husband Andrew who loved flying.

At this point I’m starting to laugh inside my head thinking ‘wow guys, are you trying to make a point?’ when 15 minutes later another girlfriend in the group, Megan, says, ‘I found a place that we could stay at in North Carolina.’ This place was on Canyon Road and I currently live on a street named Canyon.

I know in my heart and mind that this is supposed to happen and that Steve and Andrew are ganging up on me to make sure that I take care of myself and prioritize my health. I know that they are still with us to some extent, guiding our way.
