Katie | Journal | CaringBridge

Journal entry by Anne Slamkowski

Good afternoon all our prayer warriors!  We had our appointment today for Katie's upcoming surgery and received news on what happens in Phase 2 of the process.  I will try to keep this as brief as possible because there is so much to tell.

Katie has seizures happening in what looks to be two areas of the left temporal lobe.  She also has language and memory processing on the left side of her brain.  Because the doctors were unable to determine the exact origin of the seizures and are unclear which exact area Katie's language is coming from, they must do more testing.  This testing includes a surgical operation.

On July 18th we will head in to Cincinnati Children's Hospital to have 8 probes inserted into Katie's left temporal lobe of her brain.  These probes will be locked in place, and Katie will go back to a hospital room.  We will wait for Katie to have seizures so the doctors can hopefully determine the exact origin of the seizures in her brain.  Also they will run tests on her language processing to determine where her speech and memory origins are in her brain.  Probably, like us you are wondering - how long does this take?  This is where we need prayers.  It can take from 2 to 30 days!  It just depends on her seizure activity.  Once again, we are asking for you to pray for Katie to have seizures the week of the 18th of July.

There is a plan in place for once the doctors determine the origin of the seizures and the language center, but for now, please pray for the doctors to collect their data quickly AND for the seizures and the language process to be in different areas of the brain.  If you are unsure of what to pray - just pray for the Slamkowski Family Intentions - because we will for sure be praying.

I don't know if I can thank you all enough for your prayers, hugs, thoughts, cards, and phone calls.  We are so thankful for everyone in our life.  God has blessed us with some pretty special relationships.  There are times when you realize there is no way you could do this alone.  This is one of those times.  Thank you for being there for us in whatever way you can - we feel it!

We will definitely post again on the 18th to let everyone know how Katie is doing after surgery.  Surgery can take up to 4 hours.

Keep stormin' heaven with prayers for Katie!
