Katie’s Story

Site created on July 10, 2022

We were  in Minnesota to celebrate my parents 50th anniversary and  Katie had an accident on a golf cart on July 8th.  She fractured her skull in three places and had bleeding in the front of her brain.

We are in the PICU at Hennepin County Medical Center and would very much appreciate your prayers.

I just met with the doctors.  Her numbers are ok now, but they expect significant swelling to occur over the next few days.  We won’t be out of the woods until that’s behind us.  They’ve put a drain in her brain to relieve pressure and put a port in her leg to increase the sodium to help reduce pressure.

If things go well, they expect her to be in the ICU for a few weeks.  She well be intubated for at least 5 more days.

We will update as we have more info.  For now, we need your prayers. We will be anxiously waiting and watching for the next 4 days.

I apologize for the delay in posting.  Katie is doing really well.  She's continues to attend Craig three days a week.  Every day she has OT, PT, Speech, School and Therapeutic Recreation (T-Rec).  Everyone at Craig continues to be fabulous.

Her teacher (Laura) at Craig is out of this world and she's working closely with Katies team at school.  Chatfield has been amazingly supportive.  We have a meeting with Laura and her Chatfield team tomorrow afternoon.  The goal is to meet her teachers, find her classrooms, figure out where she will sit etc...  Katie will then attend one class in person this Friday.  We will see how that goes and progress from there.  One day at a time...

We had what I hope will be her last CT and appointment with neurosurgery two weeks ago.  Everything is healing well and she's now cleared to swim, run and jump.  She's allowed to fly starting in October (12 weeks post final surgery) which is great news.

Katie's heart rate has come down a little which is great.  Her hair loss is improving a little as well.  We still don't know the cause of that.  I suspect it's all the radiation, but that's just my uneducated opinion.

We just got home from a wonderful weekend in Winter Park.  Yesterday was our annual trip to Rocky Mountain National Park to hear the elk bugling.  It never gets old.   On Saturday we celebrated two dear friends 50th birthdays.  Katie and Claire took photos at the party, which was a treat.

So, overall everything is going pretty well.  The love and support from our family and friends is something we will never forget.  You will forever have our sincere gratitude for everything.
