Dear friends and family of Kathy,
Kathy arrived at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Golden Valley, Minnesota a week ago, after traveling 1,000 miles in a two car caravan along with Grace, Shane, Hunter, and Hunter's dog Wizard. She finally arrived in the midst of a pre-Christmas blizzard (to all those Minnesotans who wanted a white Christmas - you got your wish!) Despite the treacherous weather, she tolerated the journey well. On Christmas Eve morning she was admitted to the Rehabilitation program and entered a 14-day quarantine, as is required for any patient transferring from a different hospital system. This means she stays in her room and has therapies and meals there, separated from other patients. Due to COVID-19, regular patients are only allowed to see visitors one hour per week, outside. Their strict regimen has thankfully kept Courage Kenny free of a single case of COVID-19, which will hopefully continue to hold true for the next few weeks - Kathy will get her first COVID-19 vaccine on January 6th!
Luckily, we get to have 'window visits'. I went to visit Kathy on Monday and greeted her with a series of posters that I held up and placed on the window to block the glare. She looked happy to see me, and promptly got up and moved closer to the window, which set off a movement alarm and brought staff into her room. They saw that I was visiting, got her safely situated in her chair, set up the phone, and we talked for about 15 minutes. Despite the window, the separation, the snow, the cold, my heart soared! I will never forget her look of recognition when she saw me for the first time through the window, smiled, waved and signed I Love You.
We finish 2020 with gratitude and thanks, humbly recognizing that this has been a year of tremendous loss for many people all over the world. We don't know what 2021 will bring. Yet we are so very fortunate that Kathy is here entering the New Year beside us.
For last year's words belong to last year's language,
And next year's words await another voice.
What we call the beginning is often the end,
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
