Karson’s Story

Site created on December 31, 2021

Hi everyone!
Most of you know me, but some may not. I’m Julia Harcharik, Karson’s girlfriend and mother of his child. We live together and have always planned on spending forever with each other, there’s just not an official title quite yet.😉
Myself and Karson’s mom Missy will be running this site to keep everyone up to date with Karson’s journey.

Just a recap-
Karson was at work diverting traffic around an accident on the interstate. He was struck from behind by a drunk driver. He was taken to OSF in Peoria, where he had surgery on his spine. Between his hard headed-ness and resilience, we have the highest hopes that he will regain mobility. He is the strongest guy I’ve ever met, and he has the BEST support system.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Julia Harcharik

From the first sleepover I had with Karson, I knew he was always going to be picky about beds lol. It has to be just right for him to be comfy. For over a month now he’s put up with the totally uncomfortable hospital beds. Well, today, he had enough 😂 He asked the nurse his options and while there were a few, the best one was getting a foam mattress topper! So we did a little research, and off to target I went! He’s nice and cozy again, thank goodness.

There’s not really much of a physical update today, since Sunday’s are his rest days. We watched a few movies, then decided we wanted chicken strips from the cafe instead of the room service food. On my way back up, I happened to get on the elevator with a sweet older lady, she seemed about 70ish years old. She was going up to the 21st floor like I was, and if you don’t know how Shirley Ryan is set up, each floor is for specific injuries. So we sparked a conversation. She told me about her husband who just got here today, and about his injury/severity and my heart broke for them. She asked about Karson. I told her about the accident and she got really quiet and then began to bawl. She cried and just kept apologizing. She asked our ages and if we had any kids, and those answers just made her more upset for us. I didn’t know what to do! However, there is one thing I did take out of that interaction that I wanted everyone to think about.

This situation Karson, Scarlett and I have been put in is not fair. None of it has been. But we are adjusting and continuing on. That’s how life works. So here’s what I ask for you all - if you know Karson and ever reach out to him or plan on being at the benefit, please remember this. We’ve been processing this for over a month now. He’s been working hard physically and together we’ve been working hard mentally. While we appreciate the sympathy, please just praise the good with us! Encourage him after seeing pics or videos of him moving mountains up here. Keep reminding him there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. We don’t need any more tears. We can’t change the past. Keep the jokes coming. Keep giving him hell when you text him. Keep his spirit and fight alive in him. THAT is what will get us through this in the end.❤️

The human body does amazing things, but the brain works even bigger miracles. If we can keep him focused on the end goal, we can make it there.
