Karl’s Story

Site created on December 24, 2018

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.
Hello everyone stopping by this site to visit. I thought this would be the easiest way to get a message to each of you wanting to know more about Karl and how he is doing. I will start by letting you know the history of Karl’s illness and how it has evolved. In May of 2018, he developed pain in his abdomen and then jaundice. This was when we discovered he has pancreatic cancer and that it had spread into his liver. Karl’s colleagues and doctors arranged for us to rapidly begin the journey of controlling this disease. After his initial visits to University of Maryland for some diagnostic testing and a surgical procedure, we decided to go to Johns Hopkins Hospital - where the pancreatic research group offered the possibility of a few new treatment options. Karl received two regiments of chemotherapy and then developed an infection. The last few months we tried to control the infection and to clear things in order to proceed with therapy. The disease ended up not being controlled and we along with his doctors have decided the next journey will be the final more pleasant journey. He will receive home comfort care. We arrived home in time for the Christmas Holiday. Karl is peacefully enjoying being home. The Chesapeake Hospice team have visited and have set up a care plan. We want to thank everyone that has called, visited, sent well wishes/cards/texts and just prayed for us. If this is the first you are hearing of this, I apologize that this is the method in which you discovered the news. If you would please, leave messages here, tell stories of your relationship with Karl, post a photo or just let us know you visited. I know Karl has touch many lives and has been a good friend, mentor and confidante. He truely enjoyed his friends both at work and outside of work. We have a loving family that are here for us and will be visiting through out the holiday season. He and I have had a wonderful 27 year - life of love and friendship and are thankful that our path and yours was crossed. I will add more updates and follow your visits here and keep him informed of your messages. A special thank you from me for all of the concern for me and my emotional and physical well being. We are blessed to have so many caring friends.
