Good evening everyone - it’s late and I’m typing this on my phone so I assure you this will be quick.

As a final report on the organ donation, all 4 major organs were used to help others today.  My sister successfully gave a lung, her liver, and her kidneys.

There was a struggle finding a donee for her heart because my sister was so little that most institutions were needing a bigger heart for a bigger person - and because she was 47 it also was not a good fit for a child.

God Still made a way - her valves were successfully donated and so since there’s more than one valve, she’ll impact even more people!

We we have a pretty amazing video up on Facebook of her hero walk to the operating room.  Check out my page (Kendall Koens) and be blessed.

OK - that was pretty long.  Thank you for your prayers and words of encouragement.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:28‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Thats what today was about.  God working all things out.

You are loved!!!!

Tomorrow morning at 10 AM we will hold a flag raising ceremony for any who wish to attend. The flag has already been raised as the surgeries happened today, but we will celebrate and remember together tomorrow. The ceremony will be outside so it won’t be long, but if you are interested in coming meet at the flag pole at Saint Marys Hospital Francis entrance facing 2nd Street. Looking forward to celebrating Kari’s gifts as well as all the recipients receiving hope this day.

The Organ Donor flag flies just beneath the American Flag at the Saint Marys Francis entrance facing second street. Minutes ago we said our very tearful farewells. As we followed behind as Kari was wheeled to the elevator to the OR, a sea of friends and coworkers lined the unit and hall singing amazing grace over us. The elevator doors closed and off she went to save lives. She is in the hands of tremendously capable and compassionate staff all of whom we now consider friends.
Sweet Kari, we know Friday your ears were full of Your Savior’s words saying “well done good and faithful servant” and now we say so as well. Well done daughter. Well done sister. You are loved. See you in our forever home. Give Jesus a hug for us. Kisses and hugs.

Recipients have been located for Kari's left lung and liver! Search for heart and kidney recipients will continue through the morning. The operating room time has been scheduled for 10 AM when organ procurement will take place. We will have a moment of silence with the ICU staff to read some notes we have made in her honor and then say our goodbyes to our daughter and sister. The same moment of silence and words we have written to honor Kari & the Lord will be read aloud in the operating room before surgery takes place. It will be a very heavy day for our family but simultaneously a day of great hope for many other families. Only God can masterfully weave hope & joy out of immense tragedy. To God be the glory!

Kari was pronounced brain dead at 10:22 PM last evening. Although she has gone to be with Jesus, her body is still on supportive measures as we have elected to donate her organs. Most of today is continuing to test the body and organs continually for viability. The hope is at some point tomorrow search for recipients can begin. As of now, we have been told to anticipate organ procurement overnight tomorrow or Monday. No set plans yet. We wait on the response of her body. We are tremendously grateful to the amazing and compassionate team both here at the hospital and with Life Source. Grateful beyond words for the care you extend to our beloved. As we keep you apprise of the situation over the next few days, we need your prayers for strength, for alertness in decision making, for the ability to love without condition....as only Jesus would.
Sweet Kari, we love you. This is (as your mother so aptly put it) the best day of your life. Oh what a welcome home celebration you are experiencing! We miss you like crazy already and we look forward to eternal life together one day. Welcome home sweet sister, welcome home.

Kari’s Story

Site created on November 2, 2018

Friday, November 2, 2018, Kari was walking to work and was struck by an automobile driving 40 mph. Her body was thrown 20 feet from the crosswalk. She sustained very critical injuries and internal bleeding. She has a broken collar bone and ribs. Her spleen was emergently removed. Most severe is a massive brain injury that includes the brain stem. The swelling on the brain is significant. Your prayers are coveted. Of all the uncertainty and troublesome words in these days of one thing we are certain, Kari loves the Lord Jesus Christ and has given her life to Him and believes in Him as her Savior and Lord. We, Kari's family, trust that God is right and good and merciful in all He does.  He is faithful to Kari & is keeping her for Himself.
Additionally, we, Kari's family extend grace & mercy & compassion the driver of the vehicle that struck her. If you ever read this, please know you are forgiven. You are loved.
