I wish that this post was better news, but Karen's health has taken an unfortunate turn for the worst. She is in the hospital and as comfortable as possible. Please keep Karen and her family in your thoughts and prayers at this time. More updates to come.

Working Hard

It has been a few weeks since the last update, but Karen has been working so hard to get her strength back and begin to take back her independence. She has been doing physical therapy six times a week and is pushing herself as hard as she can. She is adapting to her knew way of life and is looking forward to coming home (so soon!). Yesterday she was able to walk without assistance using just a walker. This is such a huge step (pun intended :)) toward her recovery! We are all so proud of her and can't wait to have her back home for the holidays. More updates to come!

Today all of Karen’s children and grandchildren surprised her with a Thanksgiving visit and feast. She was so shocked and elated to see everyone especially her little people, whom she hasn’t seen in over a month. We all enjoyed some quality family time today and had our first dinner together in a very long time. Tonight as we count our blessings, we count Karen twice ☺️.

I spoke with Karen last night and she took 10 steps yesterday on the parallel bars at Shirley Ryan! She is so excited and more determined than ever to regain as much of her movement ability as possible. She is in great spirits and working towards meeting many more milestones! More updates to come!

Strength in Mind and Body

Karen is working hard on her rehabilitation and is now sitting up for 1.5 hours at a time! She is using her upper body strength to become more independent and is working to push herself up off her bed and off of her wheel chair into a sitting and standing position. She is improving every day with her standing strength. She is back to knitting, which is calming for her and is helping her get her sense of normalcy back. At times she is worried about the future and the challenges she will now face for the rest of her life, so please keep the positive thoughts, texts, calls and comments coming! It is looking like she will not be Chicago too much longer, we are hopeful and excited to have her home where she belongs. More updates to come!

Step by Step

Karen is finishing up her first week at Shirley Ryan and she is sitting up and taking some steps while holding on to the parallel bars. She is working very hard to be able to walk on her own without aid for short distances and is making great strides (no pun intended). She is in great spirits and excited to make so much progress in her first week. She is looking forward to what she will accomplish next week and beyond.

Rehabilitation Time

Karen took another big step on the road to recovery yesterday, when she started her rehabilitation at the Shirley Ryan Rehabilitation Center in Downtown Chicago. She sat up three different times and is working to regain some of the muscle mass she lost. She is doing well and is looking forward to getting back home for the holidays. If you would like to write to her, her address is below:
