Karen’s Story

Site created on January 6, 2021

Our mother, Karen, tested positive for COVID-19 on 12/31/2020 and checked into the ER on January 2, 2021 with chest tightness, increased shortness of breath and low oxygen. On January 6, she was having trouble maintaining her oxygen levels, so her care staff decided it was time to transfer her to the ICU and place her on a ventilator. It will take weeks, if not months, for her to recover.

Karen's illness has been especially difficult for our family since we just lost our grandfather (Karen's father Merlin) to COVID on 12/21/2020. Please continue to send well-wishes and prayers for her recovery. We desperately need her to get better!

We truly appreciate you thinking of her, and of us, at this time. And we cannot thank her medical care team enough for everything they are doing for our mother. ♥️

Journal entry by Sarah Olson

Mom passed away at 1:45am, surrounded by the three of us (me, Jeremy and Brianna).

We are so thankful for the hours we got to spend with her today—holding her hands, rubbing her feet, stroking her hair, and telling her how much we love her.

We are so thankful for the caring and compassionate caregivers at Methodist. We know you did everything you could for her, and you did it with love.

I’ll have more to say tomorrow, but for now, I hope to get some sleep. I desperately need it.
