Newest Update

Journal entry by Grant Benjamin

A new update on Karen and her recovery.

Karen continues in her phenomenal recovery. Karen reached 6 months since her seizure hospitalization on Easter and has been returned to driving in October. (She is MUCH happier to be driving, than having to ride with Grant) Karen continued her return to work process as the Inpatient Nurse Manager at Sanford Rehabilitation unit. In November, a new opportunity arose; the Clinical Supervisor position in the Sanford Rehab Clinic. The position is still within the Sanford family and working with rehabilitation patients. The Supervisor position  will require less than the 50-60 hours Karen was putting in as the Inpatient Manager. (The Supervisor position is daytime hours, weekdays, weekend and holidays off).

So, as Karen is coming up on 37 years on the Rehabilitation inpatient unit (St. Luke's, MeritCare, and now Sanford) Karen has taken the challenge to start this new position and taking care of herself. This is a truly big step for Karen since she LOVES the Rehab Unit and all the people she worked with. As Karen has said numerous times, "I got to take care of my peoples". Now Karen is learning to take care of herself. Not that Karen will stop caring and taking care of "her peoples", but will be in more manageable hours. Karen's new neurologist, Dr. Sam, told Karen; it is time to take care of number one, since there is only one of you. Dr. Sam remarked several time's how astonishing Karen's recovery has been in two years and shows her strength. As we have been told since Karen's hospitalization on Easter, this is a long road and journey, but we continue to take one step at a time
