Kaleb’s Story

Site created on October 28, 2018

Kaleb is a fun-loving, witty 12 year old boy who was diagnosed at the age of 6 months with Cerebral Palsy.  In 2014 Kaleb had a medicine pump placed to control spasticity and he had total hip reconstruction at Gillette Children's Specialty in St. Paul.   Kaleb now returns to Gillette for spinal fusion to help correct kyphosis, outward curvature of the spine.   His family is dedicating this site to friends and loved ones who want to check-in with Kaleb and his progress.  He is an amazing kiddo, who loves school and we are confident that his strength and humor will help us through this.

Journal entry by Kaleb Johnson

Kaleb has made good progress since being home. Kaleb had a great birthday and has been very happy seeing his family, friends, school buddies Josh and Maia, and wonderful care givers.

Kaleb has progressed well with tube feeds, oral feeds and BMs. Kaleb’s appetite for oral feeds hasn’t been too much so his doctor said to stop the tube feeding for a couple days in order to see if his appetite increased and he couple possibly have the tube removed. We stopped the tube feeds around noon today.

The night got interesting however. Kaleb has had a bit of a runny nose. It seems that the runny nose generated a lot of mucus. Kaleb started to cough, then puke and as he started puking the feeding tube started to come up and out of Kaleb’s mouth. We had to quickly extract the tube and then everything was fine. So no choice now, the tube feeds are definitely stopped.

Kaleb wanted a quesadilla before bed, so we had a quesadilla as a bedtime snack. Hopefully the appetite continues to improve, the digestive system continues to do its job and we won’t need to insert another feeding tube.

Kaleb is all excited now about going back to school. Watch out Mrs. Summers and Ms. Sahak, Kaleb might be heading your way soon :)
