Journal entry by Amy Rittenhouse

Justin has made amazing progress in just 2 weeks. While he is required to walk with a walker or use his reclining back/elevated foot wheelchair, he is slowly becoming more independent. He is able to go from sitting to standing and standing to sitting without someone holding his leg. He is walking (using his walker) without having to have someone lift his leg or use the handle on his brace to lift his leg himself. He still needs assistance getting in and out of bed because it's difficult for him to move his leg back and forth independently due to the hip socket area healing. He has been going to his team's baseball practices and games when he's feeling good and we've been able to get him outside in his wheelchair several times to enjoy the nice weather. He's working on catching up on schoolwork (begrudgingly). His homeroom/science teacher brought his favorite homework assignment to our house--taste testing different types of Crumble Cookies and letting her know which was his favorite. Thanks Ms. Kulik! Next Monday, we will go back to the city for Justin's 3 week post-op appointment where they will take off the dressing to check his incision, hopefully do a little PT and let us know what more he can start doing, and will check his healing overall. He will, mostly likely, remain in his waist to foot brace for at least 3 more weeks until he's a little more stable. On Monday, he will also re-start chemo. This chemo will continue to kill the cancer that has metastasized to his lungs. He's scheduled to do 7 more rounds of chemo. For reference, the first phase was 3 rounds. We're hoping that this chemo doesn't set back his leg healing progress too much, but we know what chemo does to his body and aren't disillusioned about what this could look like. Thank you to everyone who has sent well wishes, provided meals, come to visit, and checked in on us through texts or messages. We continue to be impressed with Justin's determination and hope that it continues through this difficult process.
