In addition to Julie's nerve pain in her knee, leg and foot from complications with a knee replacement 3 years ago she slipped on the ice on Presidents day, February 17th, 2020 and bad headaches followed. After 13 days in the hospital they ruled out cancer, blod clots, migraine, etc. They determined she had a CSF leak (cerebral spinal fluid). This is the fluid around the brain and spinal column. They couldn't find the source of the leak and sent her home.
Because of covid she couldn't get back in to be seen by Health Partners. Finally a referal to the Mayo and getting insurance approved the Mayo radiology dept found the leak at the L12 vertebra mid section of the spine. A small bone spur punctured the dura lining that holds the CSF.
surgeon said her condition is very rare but fortunately he has 30 years experience repairing these leaks.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Julie Curtis

Good evening!  I think this will be the last update from me.  Thank you so much for your prayers and thoughts as I have walked (kind of) this health journey.  I most certainly do not have the strength in myself but know WHO does!

I am making progress with the healing of the knee. It kind of reminds me of giving birth. I forgot the pain part and healing process until I did it again. Ouch!

I am, however, average if not above average for my range of motion. I just started pool therapy which is so good on joints. I had to wait six weeks after surgery to go into a pool. The pain level is still high but sometimes ya just got to suck it up. I continue to exercise and stretch at home.  Doing the stairs is really a challenge still.

Unfortunately, the spasms in the muscle from knee to hip is back. I had hoped the new knee would eliminate this but after the swelling went down, the spasms started. I saw a pain management specialist this week. He was the one who helped with the headaches. We have a plan, hopefully for this.

Also, the nerve pain from knee to foot came back. I found out on Friday there is a specialist in the cities here who can hopefully help with this.  It definitely saves a trip to the Mayo.

I will be going back to work on Monday (March 15).  I'm looking forward to catching up my co-workers.  This does, however, mean I will have to wear REAL clothes again.  No more stretchy pants and sleeping until 10:00 am.!

Tom and I celebrated our 31st anniversary a week ago.  It was much better than our 30th as I was in the hospital!

Thanks again for "listening".  God is good....all the time.
