Living in Hope with MBC

Early this year I noticed changes in the lumpectomy scar from the breast cancer I went through in 1999/2000. A biopsy confirmed that the cancer had returned.  A mastectomy was scheduled, proceeded by CT, Bone and MRI scans. Then news of the results from the scans came back indicating that the cancer had spread to my lungs and bones. The mastectomy was canceled and a lung biopsy confirmed that the spots on my lungs are the breast cancer metastisized to the lungs.

The medical reality of Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) is that it is stage IV and that it is not curable. It is treatable. I am strong and in otherwise excellent health (for 58), the spots on the lungs and the bones are very small. Many people with MBC have symptoms before they are diagnosed. I have not experienced any of those symptoms. So we can hope and pray for good response to the treatment and many good years to come.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death… We all must face our own mortality—in this time of in-between—in these aging bodies we live in. But we hope in the restoration of all creation and an eternity with the Creator. I want to keep my eyes on Him, trusting and leaning on Him to help me to love and live well in these days ahead.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Juliana Barker

Spring has arrived and we're enjoying the warmer weather and buds sprouting everywhere. We have had a pair of barred owls living in our little neck of the woods for several years now. They are very active day and night during nesting season. We have been entertained by so much activity and their calls to each other. This week I was able to capture video and close up photos of one hunting chipmunks just a few feet from our driveway.

I have been on my new targeted treatment for three months now, since discovering the changes in my cancer in December. In January I had an intense bout of heartburn for 48 hours and quickly learned NOT to take the medication on an even a half empty stomach. I'm feeling very good, with plenty of energy.

I underwent scans this week and met with my oncologist to discuss the results. The tumors in the liver have not grown. They are seeing some new bone metastasis, mild increases in some lung nodules and mild decreases in others. But over all the doctor felt the cancer was "stable"  and recommends continuing this treatment for another three months when we'll rescan and reevaluate.

Thank you all dear friends for your prayers. I am always humbled when ever someone says they are praying fro me.

Along with the Bible Project (and our small group)  I'm meditating and studying Jesus' Sermon on the Mount this year.

I continue to pray for peace and that I would be a peacemaker.

I hope that those who are suffering will be comforted.

I hope that more of us will see the way of Jesus and the upside-down kingdom. May those of us who call ourselves Christian be known by our love.
