Nolan Ryan’s Story

Site created on July 5, 2019

Hi I am Nolan Ryan Powell and my Parents are Maggie Ryan and Jacob Powell. I was born 6 weeks early on August 8th. I weighed 2lbs 11oz at birth. I was also born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Basically it means the left side of my heart didn't form properly. I have to undergo a series of heart surgeries within the first 4 years of my life so my heart will function more like a normal heart.
I am currently in the NICU just trying to gain enough weight so the doctors feel comfortable enough to operate on my little heart. Mom is staying in Minneapolis with my grandma and grandpa. She is not working so she can be at the hospital with me everyday. Dad is at home in Superior, working very hard to support me and mom.
Every donation we receive will be used for traveling, bills, and other costs related to the time I've spent in the hospital so far as well as my future stays. Any donation is appreciated and so are your prayers and well wishes.
Thank you for all of your support!

Journal entry by Maggie Ryan

Nolan went home to God this morning at 9:45. The last few days, Nolan's health had been declining. His bilirubin level kept going up and was in the high 60s. His kidneys were showing that they were working extra hard to keep up and his chest x-ray showed that there was a lot of fluid around his lungs. He wasn't able to keep his oxygen saturations up and his heartrate was slowing down as well. He was being kept alive by the ventilator and medication.

This morning, Jacob and I got to hold our baby for the first time in a while and we told him repeatedly how much we love him and how proud we are of his fight. He fell asleep at 9:45, comfortably in our arms, unattached from the ventilator.

We are so incredibly proud of Nolan and all of the obstacles he overcame. He fought so incredibly hard and his too short life blessed many people. We would like to thank all of you for your continuous support, love and donations. We would also like to thank the many doctors and nurses we worked with at Children's as they made this journey a little easier to handle.

We will have a visitation for Nolan this Friday, October 18th from 5-8pm at Gearty-Delmore 39th Ave N and West Broadway, Robbinsdale, MN 55422. The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 19th at 10am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church 4087 W Broadway Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55422. Internment at Gesthemane 8151 42nd Ave N, New Hope, MN 55427.
