Josie’s Story

Site created on May 27, 2019

Josie is 4 years old and was diagnosed with B Cell ALL (leukemia) on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.  After two weeks of a fever and no other symptoms, we were sent to Shands in Gainesville, FL.  Her blood work showed bone marrow suppression.  Even then, she still had no other symptoms and was our usual silly Josie.  When the doctor came in and verified it was leukemia, time stopped and the air left the room.  It quickly became a blur - the next day she had surgery to put a port that would connect to her heart and deliver chemo.  She also had a lumbar puncture and some chemo put into her spine.  The lumbar puncture tested whether leukemia had made it to her spine.  Fortunately, it did not.

Josie is having a good day.  She reacted well to the chemo she received yesterday.  She is napping now but when she wakes we may try to do a field trip outside the floor. The steroids she is on is giving her some mood swings - we just have to remember that when she’s cranky and irritable it’s the drugs...it’s so unlike Josie to be in a mad mood!  We’re grateful when she feels better and goes back to her silly, sweet self.
