Josh’s Story

Site created on April 27, 2018

Around 8:30 am on Friday, April 27th  Josh was struck by a car in Oak Park while riding his bike to school.   He was only a few blocks away from our house.    When we arrived at the scene he was already in the ambulance being worked on and they were ready to go.   We knew immediately that his wrist was broken and he had facial and leg lacerations.  Thankfully the paramedics took us to Loyola where they have great pediatric care for traumas.  As the morning progressed Josh felt worse and worse.  His head hurt, he was very sick and he became less and less alert.  His situation went downhill quickly.    A CT scan showed that he had a growing epidural hematoma that needed emergency surgery.   Those moments were some of the hardest of our lives as we realized how serious this was.  Seeing him in that state was terrifying.   He was taken to the OR where his skull fracture was repaired (it was quite severe) and they removed the blood clot.   He was then moved to  the pediatric intensive care  unit where he is now resting as comfortably as he can.  The orthopedic docs just came and reset his wrist.

That's the simple version and we wanted to update all of our family and friends.  I know not everyone is on social media so I thought starting this site would be helpful.   I will update as things progress.    My (Lisa) family is all on their way from Detroit and we are thankful for all the friends that have helped out and sent love.  We have soaked up every bit of it.   Please feel free to leave a comment for Josh as I know he would love to hear from you!

Josh is currently at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL.      At this time is he in the pediatric intensive care unit.

As much as I worried about this happening to one of our kids, I never really thought it would.   But it did and we are thankful for some space between that scary day and now.   Physically Josh continues to heal very well.  The incision on his head looks better and better.   He's due for a short arm cast next week and that should give him some much desired freedom.   The laceration on his leg has probably been the slowest to heal, but it was something that we put to the side because of all the bigger concerns at the time.   Overall, he's doing very well.  He is missing his class trip this week, which is hard, but we will find ways to celebrate on our own!

This has been such a great way to keep everyone connected, thanks for reading.  I hope you don't, but if you ever find yourself in a similar spot, Caringbridge has been a wonderful site to help families through some of life's most difficult times.   I highly recommend it.

I decided to embrace my grey hair about a year ago and the last three weeks have accelerated that experience.  We never know what life will bring us!

All I can leave you with is to make the best of each and every day you and your loved one's have together.  Life can change in an instant.   Wear your bike helmets and remind your kids to always be aware of driveways and alleys.  Also, it is ALWAYS better to be late than reckless, so please drive and ride and walk and run with caution!

Thanks for the love.  We are forever grateful.  Never stop showing up for each other and I pray we can do the same for you.
