Joseph’s Story

Site created on February 6, 2021

I'm a "Little Man with a Big Plan." On December 31st 2020, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Non-small cell Lung Cancer. It all started off as a persistent cough that was misdiagnosed as pneumonia. When the antibiotics for pneumonia failed to work, my doctor became suspicious that something else was going on. A CT scan revealed a tumor in my right lung. From that point I had tissue samples taken from the tumor which officially confirmed that it was lung cancer. I'm a non-smoker and was relatively asymptomatic, so this diagnosis definitely came as a shock to us all. A PET scan and brain MRI showed that the cancer had metastasized to my abdomen, pelvis, spine, and brain.

If there is one thing I have learned on this journey so far it is that no matter how much we stress and worry about "the plan" that we have for our lives, the plan can change at any moment. We have no control over our long term trajectory. What we do have control over is NOW. We all need to be more mindful and present and truly appreciate all of the blessings that we are given. Don't wait to be overly generous, thankful, or overly loving to the people you care about.

We are blessed with such loyal and supportive family and friends. This Caring Bridge site is here to keep you all updated on my fight, and to keep the positive thoughts flowing.

Journal entry by Joseph Pangelinan

Hello everyone,  I participated in the Padres Pedal the Cause event last weekend and I was able to complete the 25 mile ride ! It was really amazing to be able to do that event this year.  It was my 3 year doing it. The first year I was only able to walk the 5K because of the new diagnosis and chemotherapy. I was able to run the 5K last year and I committed to riding the event this year because I am so grateful to still be here and be relatively healthy. However, it almost didn't happen because of the whole brain radiation procedure that I had in mid January. The treatment was fine, but 2 weeks after the last treatment the side effect started. They hit pretty hard and didn't subside for over 2 months. I won't get into all the details but the first full belly of food that I was able to eat was only 8 days before the event... I said if that if I could eat well and hold some food down for a week, I would attempt it.  The previous week was OK so I went for it.  It was challenging, especially riding over the Coronado Bridge !! I did it though and I am proud of the effort. Never underestimate yourself !You are stronger than you think you are.  Thank you for supporting me and helping me in this cause.  I not only completed the event, I've raised over $23,200 to help fund necessary research to help find the next treatments or possibly the next cure to this horrible disease. If you haven't already donated, I could really use your help.  I need $1800 more to hit my goal of $25,000. If I hit that goal, I'll be recognized by Curebound as a leading fundraiser in the cause and it would really mean a lot to me. Here is the link if you don't already have it. Please feel free to give whatever feels meaningful to you.  Again, thank you for all of your support !  Here's to your health !! with much Love... Joseph-
