Joseph’s Story

Site created on October 22, 2020

Welcome to the CaringBridge site for Joseph Meyer. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place- thank you so much for visiting! We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement!

Here's a summary of what's been going on with Joseph.

About 5 years ago Joseph was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment which was expected to  progress (and did) to dementia.  This was devastating news to both Joseph and his family as he has a mind of gold and is such an intelligent and brilliant scholar, theologian, and philosopher.

At the end of May, 2020 Joseph had a seizure and was taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital where an MRI revealed a large brain tumor which was determined to be a glioblastoma, which is an aggressive form of cancer. He underwent surgery in record fast time to remove the tumor (with great margins!) and, once he was stable, went to Spalding Rehabilitation  for therapy. After being discharged home, Joseph began chemotherapy and radiation and was able to live at home and enjoy walks with the cute dog, Colt, and arguing about why he wasn't driving.

Mid-September, a follow-up MRI (after 6 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation) revealed that the tumor had returned and with it two additional tumors (all in the right hemisphere, all in areas being targeted by the radiation). At this time, Joseph's oncology doctors elected to discontinue any treatment of the cancer and recommended looking in to hospice care to help make him as comfortable as possible. Hospice began near the end of September.

Joseph has been able to enjoy visits from his brothers John and Jim and his sister Jessy, celebrations for his daughter, son, and son in-law's birthdays, and many yummy treats (he sure does have a sweet tooth!!) and wonderful visitors.

He is now near the end. He is no longer responsive and has stopped eating or drinking. We praise God that he is able to be at home and that, despite the pandemic, we are able to be here with him.

Thank you so much for visiting his page. Thank you so much for your kindness, prayers, and love for such an incredible and wonderful man. What a blessing to have had him in our lives!! There is no doubt in our minds that he has impacted all of our lives in such profound and positive ways.

We love you Joseph Meyer, fantastic father, wonderful husband, excellent brother, incredible Uncle, and terrific friend (and amazing grandpa!!)

Journal entry by Joseph Meyer

Hello friends.

Joseph went to be in paradise and finally get some rest and relief from those horrible brain tumors on Friday, October 23, at 3:20pm. He was with his family and they were able to hug him and cry together and honor his memory.

Please, if you've found your way to this page, please post a story or memory of Joseph. Give his family the gift of reminiscing about him and recalling this incredible, wonderful, and deeply loved man.

Thank you and God Bless.
