Joseph’s Story

Site created on August 13, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Joseph has always been very healthy. He would get the common cold or flu every now and then but he was never hospitalized for anything, not even a broken bone and never had to take much medicine.

Then 2020 happened. January he dealt with the onset on double vision and everything just spiraled from there. We went to several doctor appointments and received very little help. His primary doctor said he was Anemic and did nothing else. His Optometrist said he had the worst vision she had ever seen and gave him new glasses and did nothing else. His Chiropractor said he just pulled a muscle and did nothing. His Anxiety doctor just pushed pills. It wasn't until we saw his Ophthalmologist on 7/29 and she said he needed an MRI ASAP.  Then on August 1st(while waiting for an MRI appointment) he collapsed at home and 911 was called. He went to Banner UMC and they ran several test and found a tumor in his brain. After more in-depth scans they found a second tumor in his brain. On August 11th the biopsy results came back confirming cancer. He has 2 Germinoma brain tumors. Now he is starting the journey of Chemotherapy and Radiation. Please keep Joseph in your prayers.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Sarah Bridwell

Hey everyone!

We wanted to send an update letting you all know that Joseph finished his last radiation treatment today!

The plan is to have an MRI in about 3 weeks to make sure there isn't anything left. Praise be to God and we're so thankful to all of you for all of the continued prayers and support through everything. We have attached a picture of Joseph today right after his last radiation appointment. Going forward he will meet with his Oncologist one more time after the MRI and then will meet every 3 months to check in and MRI's will also be scheduled to recheck.

Joseph has a clinic appointment tomorrow that will be several hours. For this appointment he will be fasting after midnight tonight and most of tomorrow because he needs continuous blood work done tomorrow about every 30 minutes to check his cortisol levels, along with a cortisol shot. This issue is another cause by the tumors. If the blood work shows no improvements then he will be on life-long daily shots. We are still trying to understand the medical part of it all and we hope to get more information tomorrow. There is so much to learn! His Endocrinologist says his levels are all dangerously low and has prescribed him a "For emergency only" shot to keep on hand just in case.

As for Joseph's Diabetes Insipidus issue(also life-long caused by the tumors), he has been able to keep it under control with medication and a great increase of fluid intake and has had zero issues of having low sodium.

Joseph is eager to get his life back on track and is already talking about getting a job and is even talking about going to college(he didn't have a desire before)! He will turn 20 in July and says that having cancer has shown him that life is short and that he does want to pursue further education and he actually has an interest in the medical field, believe it or not!

Thank you all again for the prayers for our boy!

God Bless
