Chemo Round 4: Trust

This cancer experience has sharpened my focus on how much implicit trust I have in many of the things we depend on to survive…the care of our doctors and nurses, the water from our tap, the food we buy at the grocery store. We’re all depending on total strangers to safely provide these essential life ingredients. Is that trust rational? As I’ve become hyper-aware of everything that goes into my body and how sensitive the body chemistry can be, that question has certainly given me pause. I mean, I’m not going to spend the energy to dissect everything that is done in order to provide me with food, water, and care, but I’m examining the question more closely now. And I’m appreciating my inherent skepticism and curiosity which have both kicked in to counter that blind trust that I had for most of my life. Do I need to take this prescription? Is this tap-water safe to drink? Are there chemicals, hormones, pesticides on or in this food? Is this woo-woo or is there real merit to this treatment? At the end of the day, I have to accept a great deal of trust in the integrity and brilliance of other people. But I’ve also enjoyed a new sensation of empowerment in questioning that external trust, and cultivating trust in my own journey.
