Journal entry by Joanne Straight —
On January 23rd John and Joanne traveled to Mass Eye & Ear (part of Mass General Brigham) in Boston for a long-awaited (5 months) appointment with Dr. Brittney Mazza, OD. Dr. Mazza specializes in Aphakic contact lenses. Aphakia means not having a lens in your eye. John’s lens was removed either because of the ski accident on January 11, 2023, or in one of the surgeries to repair his eye after the ski accident. John’s vision was tested by Dr. Mazza and found to be 20/20 in the good right eye and 20/400 in the injured left eye. During this appointment, John tried a regular Aphakic soft contact lens in the left eye with limited improvements in his sight – primarily he was able to read some of the (6” high?) blurry letters on the eye chart and had some peripheral vision that was previously non-existent. Dr. Mazza was pleased with the results and John decided to have a custom Aphakic soft contact lens ordered (the regular lens was too tight). To make the next 3 visits more manageable, Dr. Mazza googled an optometrist closer to us and referred us to one who is a specialist in this field. John is contacting an OD with the training in the fitting and use of Aphakic lenses located in the Derry, NH area. He will make an appointment to have this doctor order and fit him for the lens. We can drive to Derry more easily than making multiple trips to Mass Eye & Ear.
Stay tuned for the next chapter of this journey and thank you all for your prayers and support.
