Journal entry by Cynthia Kucera

Today was a much better day than yesterday - phew! After speaking with the Northern Manor Administrator, the Director of Nursing and JB's wound care doctor (who trained under Dr. Turkowski, the chief surgeon in the burn unit at Westchester) I had a nice video chat with JB who seemed very comfortable. The person holding the iPad gave me a "tour" of JB's room - a nice looking private room with its own bathroom. I then received two calls from JB's nurse who first let me know they are adding Gabapentin to his meds (for nerve pain) and they are going to manage his pain with OxyContin which will now be given without him having to ask for it. She called me later in the day to tell me they are concerned about pain he's having in his foot ad let me know they would be doing an ultrasound to make sure there are no blood clots.

The wound care doctor and nursing director both were up to speed on all of JB's injuries and I felt confident they are capable of continuing his path to recovery. I was told he will have follow up visits with his surgeon at Westchester Medical Center so Dr. Turkowski can continue to oversee his care. The wound care doctor at Northern Manor asked if he could call me every few days for updates and laughed when I told him he could call me every few hours.

I also verified they currently have a strict no visitor policy because a staff member in the geriatric wing tested positive for Covid. If there a no more positives in the next 28 days, visitation will be allowed. In the meantime, the staff seems very good about the video chats, which I have to schedule with them every morning.
