John had a massive stroke on Tuesday morning, December 24 in Lutsen, MN.  He, his brother Tom and his wife Barb, along with Tom’s son Nolan and his wife and their kids, went to Lutsen for a skiing Christmas.  At around 8:30 Tuesday morning John had the stroke while at his truck getting ready to go get his lift ticket.  Paramedics took John to the hospital in Grand Marais, MN.  The Grand Marais hospital was not fully equipped to handle someone in John’s condition so they airlifted him to St Mary’s in Duluth.  They believe they got the clot out of his brain in less than 3 hours from the time of the stroke.
John was initially admitted to St Mary’s Nuero ICU unit but was recently moved to a new room.  Testing revealed he had a blockage in his left ventricle and a piece of that dislodged, flowed to his brain, and caused the stroke.  The right side of John’s body has limited function but his left side is pretty good.
He is receiving therapy and while he still cannot speak, he can open and close his eyes on command.  He has stood up during therapy and he is also able to feed himself.  When Tom was left Duluth on the day after Christmas John was able to give him a firm left handed hand shake.
How things go from here is up to John and God, but as Bill Burns said (in a more colorful way), John is a tough, stubborn Irishman who spent 30 years in the hole (digging ditches for water and sewer pipe) and if anyone can recover from this John can.  Tom thinks he might be in Duluth for a while as they figure out where to bring him to in the cities and how to get him there.  If you happen to find yourself passing through Duluth in the near future feel free to stop by and pay John a visit.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Carl Dahl

I got a text from Angie with an update on John.  John moved in with Angie and Nolan on 3/6.  As it turns out it was a blessing since the whole COVID-19 thing started to explode soon after that.
They are really happy to have John living with them and John is really happy being there.  They completed moving John out of his Circle Pines house last week and got some new yard art out of the deal:  a fire hydrant and a cannon ball.  God only knows where and why John got them, but they will be treasured pieces of landscaping at Angie an Nolan's.  John has been going on walks around the neighborhood (both with and without someone with him) and to no one's surprise has enjoyed helping with yard work.
Because of the COVID-19 John's therapy sessions have been cancelled.  John understands why we can't go to the hospital for therapy anymore.  Angie and Nolan have been doing exercises with him and playing music alot so he can hum along.  He is understanding verbal language better but he may never be able to speak effectively again.  Angie has been calling John's friends and I have actually tried something I vowed I would never do.  Its a snap chat type app for old people called Marco Polo.  You basically send video snippets back and forth.  I "Polo'd" with John a couple of times this week.  He and Tom went and saw Bob Wier and the Wolf Brothers at the Fillmore in early March and he was proudly sporting the t-shirt the first time we polo'd.  The second time we polo'd he was sporting a tie-dye and 10 stitches on his nose.  Apparently John was on a balance board and lets just say his dismount was less than graceful.  Keep the 'Rock' in your prayers.
