Newest Update

Journal entry by Gretel Friedman

On Friday, Dec 10th Poppi stepped into his hot tub, as he does daily, not realizing that the thermostat wasn't working or that the coils he had installed that week had caused disruption to the system. it was 140 degrees, scalding hot.

He walked in, he flinched and he stumbled. His right hand catching him and his left hand on the hot tub cover that covered half of the hot tub. He managed to get out, call 911 and drive himself to the St. Lukes ER. In shock, and shaking from the trauma. They considered his burns first degree, covering around 10-15% of his body and he was flown to Idaho Falls, the closest burn center in Idaho.

He has been in Idaho Falls a week now, and the prognosis is much more serious with the burns covering 85% of his body and the degree ones converting into degree twos. He has human cadaver (someone else's skin) covering his torso, his legs, and his right arm and hand. He has endured one four hour surgery where they scraped away dead skin and placed the cadaver on top to help initiate growth from the the bottom layer of his skin. He is now intubated to help with his breathing and is been fed through a tube.

If his body can handle the trauma that surgery causes, he will continue to have them weekly to promote skin growth and to monitor any potential infection. Infection is likely the largest risk here. And his age and questionable health.

We will use this site to help manage the updates. Please also communicate with us through here and send any good wishes/thoughts as we will communicate them through to him. John was by his side on Sunday and Gretel was there Thursday with Nicki going again on Tues and Gretel back on Thursday.
