John’s Story

Site created on May 27, 2018

John was diagnosed with stage 3 pancreaticobiliary ampullary adenocarcinoma - not quite as aggressive as the more common pancreatic adenocarcinoma but uses the same protocols. He amazed the doctors with his strength in recovery from the Whipple surgery which removed the head of the pancreas, gallbladder, the first part of the small intestine, a part of the stomach, and the bile duct.  Welcome to our CaringBridge website. Newest Update

Journal entry by Sally Haff

This is just a quick positive update. There is so much going on in the world right now, all of you are in our thoughts and prayers!

John's last PET Scan was in July. There was increased activity in the liver and colon and decreased activity in the lungs. After further testing, the liver activity appears to be nothing, the decreased lung activity is a good step in confirming the spots in the lungs are truly the result of the Keytruda and will ultimately resolve, and the increased colon activity were some precancerous polyps that were removed. One of the polyps was protruding from the appendix into the colon like a barnacle. To get rid of the rest of the polyp and to be on the safe side, John will have an appendectomy. His consultation to discuss it is October 7th. Mid-September he will have another PET Scan. We are so thankful for UC Davis and their close monitoring of his progress!

Funny enough, when John went in for the Whipple surgery, he jokingly asked his Dr. to remove his appendix while he was removing so many other organs. "We don't need it, right?"

John feels great! We are so thankful for the problems that are easily solved!

John and I enjoyed a wonderful day trip to Tiburon and Sausalito. He lived in Tiburon and then San Rafael in his late twenties. He used to like to hike up to the top of this hill before the homes were built. What a gorgeous day!
