John’s Story

Site created on November 7, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Becky here, I sent out a text on Monday afternoon, 11/6, trying to figure out how to tell a group of close friends what has happens; I started the text with, “brace yourselves” and that still feels like the right way to start John’s story.

Sunday morning, after coffee together, John went about doing some chores,  as usual. This included blowing leaves from the lower roof in the backyard; something he’d done many times. This time was different.

At 10:45am, I heard a loud thud; running outside I found John unconscious on the cement driveway, Charlie was with me. Then came 911, within minutes the ambulance arrived and he was off to Regions Hospital.

The hard details. John has some brain bleeding, shearing of the brain, a broken orbital socket and cheekbone. Also, all 12 ribs of his left side are broken.

John was admitted to the NCCU (Neuro Critical Care Unit) after a quick trip to the OR to have a brain pressure monitor placed. The pressure within his head is the number one priority. So far, he has been maintaining good brain pressure.

John has been sedated and unresponsive since he was admitted to the hospital. He is also on a ventilator. All very scary, but it is helping him stay calm and letting his brain do minimal work, so it can rest and heal.

We are on day 2 now, with not much change in John. They are watching his brain pressure closely and are hoping to remove the monitor in his head today or tomorrow. This will allow for an MRI to assess his brain trauma more accurately.

Surgery to mend/plate his ribs is in the near future as well. This will help normalize his lung cavity and hopefully, help get him off the vent. That’s big goal too!

For now, it’s a waiting and watching game. A marathon they keep saying. We are taking it hour by hour, day by day. Unfortunately, right now no one really knows what to expect in the long run. So we wait, and pray.

I hope this helps all of our friends and family better understand what’s going on. We have been in awe of the outpouring of prayers, love and support of all kinds! I can say, that if Charlie needs a ride to school, we have about 10 people ready and waiting to help! And that’s just one example! We are so blessed.

Thank you to all that have reached out, texted, called, emailed etc, especially his officiating community, wow! I don’t know all the names or faces, but you all have the same thing to say, you love and respect John. I’ve been reading everyone’s messages to John.

Off to talk to a Dr. Just got word they might be putting in a chest tube. (11/7)

Love to you all and please keep praying! We will update here when we can.

Newest Update

Journal entry by John & Becky Stromme Faison

Here we are, 5 plus months into this journey.  The marathon. It  seems like forever and the blink of an eye all at once.

John has been busy with  therapy at the Health Partners  Neuroscience center. PT and OT twice a week and speech once a week. All are continuing to go well. One of John’s goals is to jog independently on the treadmill by Dec. He saw an older gentleman cruising along on the treadmill across the room from him; inspiration and challenge  on!

Physically, John is gaining strength and coordination everyday, although it’s hard for him to see. He still has the numbness on his left said, from head to toe, and that is very frustrating for him. Speech is coming along as well. Again , John doesn’t realize how much progress he’s made and is still a bit impatient with his progress.

Knowing everything takes time, that patience is your friend, and living with all the challenges day in and day out, are two very different things.

Day to day can be rough, big picture, very positive! Some days are good and some days, well, suck. Yet, everyday  John gets up ready to face what comes, and that is amazing.❤️

As Johns mind continues to come back to its previous state, he is more himself and mentally strong. Some days more than others. He’s wanting to do more and finding opportunities for “work” type of things for him to do can be challenging.  We are working to find new opportunities to challenge him every day.

His officiating community continues to be an amazing support. John was invited to watch a the 3rd place basketball final at Concordia awhile back and it was wonderful! We were also invited to brunch with some refs for  a fun Sunday! Plus the end of the year SPCC meeting; these officials have the biggest hearts! ❤️

John got a surprise visit from his high school football coaches, Rich Kallok and Mal Scanlan along with current CDH football coach, Steve Walsh. It was a tearful visit and also a fun trip down memory lane for sure! John was invited to be an honorary coach for CDH’s first football game come August. Pretty cool.

So onward and upward we go, facing the daily grind and finding positive things to be thankful for  each day.

Our friends, Anne Nelesen and Tom Stephens, along with our niece Michelle Stromme, and plenty of others have graciously offered to host a fund raiser for us. We are so humbled and amazed by all the people that have come together to help support us. We are speechless and sincerely can’t tell you all how grateful we are.

Come see us if you can, Sunday, May 5th at DeGidio’s, 1-5pm. Details are at  Faisonfamilyfundraiser.com

More than anything else, we hope to see many friends, share stories, reminiscences, hug and laugh. That is what has truly kept us going, lifted our spirit,  and fills us with strength. The friendship and love ❤️

Thank you all for sticking with us along this long journey. For your love, support, yummy meals and most of all prayers. We have felt and continue to feel your love and prayers for sure.

❤️Much love, Becky
