John’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Family and friends,

Some of you may know that Dad has suffered from abnormal blood counts for a number of years. This past summer CMML was confirmed as well as MDS. He has been in maintenance mode for the past several months, although, we have seen him progressively sleep more and eat less.

Two weeks ago he called for assistance when he noticed blood in his urine.  He was admitted and had a cystoscopy several days later. They discovered stones, inserted a stent, cauterized an area that was bleeding, and took some biopsies.  The biopsies were negative.

Throughout the hospital course, Dad did not improve and had continued bleeding.  This bleeding perplexed the doctors and,  with his advanced age and  with the MDS and CMML, left us no recourse for further treatment. Renal carcinoma is suspected.

On Thanksgiving Day  the family made the decision to make Dad comfortable. He was discharged home with hospice yesterday.  Dad currently has 24 comfort care.

For those of you that have had the privilege to know Dad, you know what a significant impact he has made on his family l, friends, and community.  He has been the patriarch of the Cartland family for 60 years.

As much as he would discourage the attention, please post stories, memories and pictures.

We will do our best to keep this up-to-date.
