John and I enjoyed many evenings snow boarding (John) and skiing (me) at Stevens Pass in years gone by. And there were lots of enlightening conversations at the NOAA/PMEL lunch table, with topics bouncing all over the map. We enjoyed John's calm presence, witty comments at the right time and stories of adventures envied by all. John's courage over the past 4 years was an amazing example to all of us. John, you are missed!

John lived life more fully while fighting cancer than most of us do who are in good health. We did our first equator crossing together on the R/V Knorr, and I was fortunate to sail with him many other times over the next 30+ years. He had a great sense of humor, and got along well with everyone; always a pleasure to be around. He will be missed... RIP, John. I pray that your family and friends will be comforted by many happy memories.
