Joe’s Story

Site created on September 1, 2020

This site is dedicated to Joe Legnard during his cancer journey.  Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Joe felt happy and healthy and was very active up until the first week in August when he began to feel ill and with both headaches and toothache.  He had both issues cared for but continued to not feel himself.  On August 27 Joe was “found down”, as he and his close friends now joke, by one of his neighbors and was taken to the hospital where it was discovered that he had some sort of widely metastatic cancer.  Since that day he has undergone many tests, biopsy and even tumor resection.  Joe has been diagnosed with a very rare non-small cell lung cancer.   He will be undergoing outpatient treatment to include both radiation and chemotherapy.

Joe is doing well and surrounded by family and friends.   He continues to have a positive attitude while joking and making others smile. To keep Joe’s broad community informed, we are using this site to keep family and friends updated in one place.

This is a good place to stay updated on his journey and send him well wishes. Joe appreciates all of your support and words of hope and encouragement along with positive thoughts and prayers.  If you have photos to share, please do so by sending them to sam_anderson@comcast.net to be posted here.

At this time Joe does not have specific needs, but that may change over time. Please monitor Caring Bridge if you are interested in providing support for Joe as needs arise.

Journal entry by Mike McDermid

Today, Saturday 3/12/2022, Joe Legnard passed away peacefully after a long hard fought battle with cancer.  He would have been 48 on 3/26.

For those of you who didn't know his stroy, Joe was “found down” by one of his neighbors in his home.  He was taken to the hospital where he was preliminarily diagnosed to have widely metastatic cancer on August 27, 2020 .  He underwent many tests, biopsies, including brain tumor resection.  Joe was eventually diagnosed with a very rare non-small cell lung cancer.

Joe underwent multiple treatment modalities which initially were promising but then failed to halt the progression.   Throughout his cancer diagnosis and treatment course, he remained positive and showed grit and determination.

Joe loved Hunting, Hiking, Skiing, Ski Patrolling, and Alabama Football.   He was committed to healping others and bringing  levity to any situation including his situation during his own last days.  He showed us all how to live well with intention.

There will be a service at his hometown of Bethel, Connecticut. Details of that service and ways to contribute to remeber Joe will be forthcoming.
