Joan Rzepecki’s Story

Site created on May 22, 2020

Tragedy struck our Mom's home yesterday.  While she was at the cemetery tending to our father's grave, a fire started.  There was significant damage to her house.  The back deck and family room are demolished.  The rest of the house was severely damaged from smoke and water.  The inspector will be doing an inspection today to determine the cause of the fire.

We are thankful that our mother is unharmed physically.  She is an extremely strong woman and we know that she will make it through this with support from her family and friends. Until we find temporary housing, she is staying with her sister & brother in law, Mary & Jim Orloff.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and offered sympathy, help, and encouragement.   We have started this journal to keep everyone updated. Please feel free to share this sight with anyone interested.  We plan on updating with pictures and progress of her house as it is being rebuilt.

We are beyond thankful and grateful to the Brotherhood of my father, the Erie Fire Department.  Their quick response and fast actions saved our family home. They were all so patient, kind, and gentle with our mother.  Our father was so very proud to be a Firefighter and yesterday was a true example of why.

Everyone has been asking if they can do anything  and we sincerely appreciate it.  Once we are able to wrap our minds around this, we will certainly let everyone know what Mom needs.  Thank you again, and we are excited to bring you updates.

A lot has happened in the last 2 weeks.  The Elmwood house is being inventoried.  Items that can be salvaged are going to Rainbow (restoration). The items left will be inventoried for insurance and thrown away.  I’m sure in the next few weeks Hardner (construction) will get started on gutting the house.

Thanks to the efforts of our cousin Michelle (Langer) Skellie. My mom has secured temporary housing until she can move home.  Beautiful newly updated 3 BR ranch 3 blocks from home.  (See attached pictures).  Spectrum is coming Tuesday and in the meantime Mom has become a technologically wizard in using her phone as a hot spot for her WiFi😁

Mom is doing well and lucky to have the support of our awesome extended family and friends.  And we are blown away from the support from our (The kids - Ann Marie, Laurie, Ripper and Dan) friends too.  ❤️
