Journal entry by Melonie Cox

~August and September have flown by! We are enjoying the occasionally cooler days. It is hard to believe that a year has passed since the construction project (funded by a VA grant) began. Although I have said it before, we cannot share enough about the generosity of the VA toward ALS patients. We use every inch of the accessible primary bathroom daily and Jim is able to freely navigate in and out of our home due to the changes made.
~During August we drove to Florida and spent a week with the kids and grandkids. It took lots of preplanning and thinking through every detail of Jim’s day to make the trip successful but it was SO worth it!! We rented an accessible water wheelchair and Jim was IN the OCEAN for a couple of days. The beach has always been our favorite vacation destination and this trip did not disappoint!
~September brought some devasting news to our extended family. My 23 year old nephew was in an auto accident and is currently paralyzed from the chest down. Our ALS experience has made us hurt all the more for he and his family.
~September also delivered HOPE when Brian & Emily were matched with a baby boy due to be born just a few days after they received the news. After a week full of excited anticipation and frenzied preparation their hearts and ours were broken when the sweet birth mom changed her mind and decided to parent.  As Brian said, we cannot fathom the difficulty of this choice for the birth mom and must trust that sweet baby boy is exactly where he is supposed to be.
~ALS symptoms continue their subtle but steady pace of progression…more limb weakness, more stiffness, more noticeable changes in speech, more fatigue. We continue to lean in to our faith, trusting God’s goodness and overwhelming love. We are also SO grateful for the support of our children, our extended family and our Life Group from church. There are no words to adequately describe the value of our support system. God always knows exactly what we need & uses these individuals’ gifts in mighty & simple ways to meet those needs.
~Thank you for praying for us when we cross your mind! Your prayers make a difference to us! Also thank you for continuing the sweet & encouraging cards. Each one brings a smile and sweet memories of the sender. We pray that you see God’s hand on us in this journey and can see that God is good even in the rough times.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light and momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient and the things that are I seen are eternal.” 2 Cor. 4:16-18
