Journal entry by John McCoy —
Hello everyone!
First, I want to thank you all so much for all of your support and messages of encouragement! I really felt all of your positive energy pushing me forward.
I was able to come home the Sunday after my surgery because I dazzled my surgeon’s staff with my progress and willpower (and maybe some fancy arguments on my part 😉). It was so good to be out of the hospital, but a little intimidating not knowing what was coming next.
My recovery has been mostly on track. Everything is healing well, bones and all. I have had to learn how to do a few things a little more carefully: lay down on the couch, put on a sweatshirt, and get in my car to name a few. I had some discomfort and pain at the end of last week and got some conflicting information from my different medical teams. But today (Monday) I was reassured by my surgeon that I was coming along fine. He did this by pressing on my sternum as hard as he could and then saying in a thick Polish accent, “See? It doesn’t break!”
I keep reminding myself that each day gets a little better. I have the time and support I need to heal, which is all I can ask for!
