Jerry’s Story

Site created on September 2, 2020

We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place, and we sincerely appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. On Tuesday morning, Jerry went for his usual bike ride with his Revolution cycling group. They were near home when, Jerry hit tires with another bike and fell. He was brought by ambulance to Holmes Regional Medical Center where he was found to have a subdural hematoma, subarachnoid bleed, orbital fracture, and fractures on his right side in his neck, clavicle, ribs, and hip. He underwent surgery to relieve pressure in his brain. Surgery went well, please look for updates in the journal entries.

Journal entry by Jerilyn Bird

We just pasted the two year anniversary of Jerry's accident. I know it has been a while since I updated, but wanted to let you know that Jerry is still improving all the time. He is not practicing, but is assisting Dr. Johnson, his partner, with implant surgeries. He is in the office most mornings and spends the afternoon working on Florida Dental Association items.

We continue to go to Highland Park, IL to see the reading comprehension specialist, Donalee Markus. She is amazing and helps Jerry so much! While there, we also make a trip to the Mind-Eye Institute too. He is making continued progress and the glasses along with coaching from Donalee are helping form new connections in his brain.

His right hip has become necrotic, and so he will have a hip replacement on that side most likely in December. No more running... he is not very pleased about that.

We are closing in on finishing the remodel on our home. It is still planned to be done by the end of October, but I feel November is more likely.

Life is busy every day. I am certain that when we finally decide to retire, Life will  still be busy. We are thankful our faith is strong. Some days are very stressful, but we make it through. We have been blessed to meet so many people who have been praying for Jerry all along. We appreciate and love all of you who haven't forgotten us and continue to pray. We appreciate all your prayers and words of support. Our lives are forever changed, but they are filled with many good and wonderful things all thanks to our heavenly Father!
