Jere Matthew’s Story

Site created on January 4, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Jere Matthew Johnson, a retired chef, dedicated community volunteer and active Reenactor and participant in Living History, is currently residing at Palm Gardens Rehabilitation Center.  For many years he struggled as a brittle diabetic with foot wounds.  In 2016 he had the lower part of his left leg removed due to this.  He adapted quickly to walking with his prosthesis and even made the best of his situation by posing as an injured soldier in Reenactments.   The last several months have unfortunately brought even more health challenges to him.  At the end of October, he was admitted to the hospital with congestive heart failure and had heart catherization and stints installed.  He also had to start dialysis treatments three times a week.   In mid-November he had open heart quadruple bypass surgery.  Two days after his surgery he suffered a stroke which left him paralyzed on his left side.  On November 25, he was transferred to Rotary Rehab and then on December 15 he was transferred to Palm Gardens Rehabilitation Center and had to be in isolation for his first 14 days.  He remains paralyzed on his left side. He is transported to dialysis three times a week and is having physical therapy.

Everyone knows him as someone who is full of love, and right now he could really use some cheering up!  I know he would love to hear from his friends and family through this CaringBridge Site or you can send him a note or card at:
