Jeff’s Story

Site created on June 10, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We so appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Jeff was diagnosed with non-alcoholic liver disease twenty plus years ago and it only required a smattering of check ups and a case of mild concern. It would be years before we snapped our heads to attention.
Fast forward to today and Jeff is now in need of a life-saving transplant. His liver is failing and it's time to take action.

Jeff tires easily and he has a meager appetite.  He’s lost weight which can be a good thing but he’s lost muscle mass along with it.
His abdomen fills with excess fluid and every week he goes to the hospital to have sixteen pounds of it drained off. That’s four big soda bottle’s worth.  There’s always more fluid to come off but only 8 liters can safely be pulled at a time.  Carrying so much fluid around just drains his energy and Fridays can never come soon enough.
I’ve noticed momentary episodes of confusion in Jeff which goes along with late stage liver disease. He has diabetes as well which makes everything a little trickier.

Jeff and I have been back and forth to University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore for numerous phases of testing, as well as meetings with his liver doctor, surgeon, social worker, transplant team coordinator and nutritioinist.  As of today, June 11, 2020, all systems are go for Jeff to receive a new liver through the Living Donor program.

Keep reading on to my first journal entry for more about how this story is unfolding.

This site is public so feel free to share the link with your church, friends and family.  Do say hi to let us know you’re here and  feel free to comment and share what’s on your heart. If you want to send him/us a good old fashioned card, you can mail it to 14128 Orchard Ridge Rd, Hancock, MD 21750.

God is writing a story with our family’s life once again and our trust and hope is in Him.  Thanks for walking with us and for being part of this journey, too.

With love.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Julie Hawbaker

Zachary gets updates before we do since he is the donor and they always want to make sure he’s still willing to go through with this. So instead of rewriting what was told to him, I will simply post the informative email he received on where we are in the transplant process. This is not the best news but it’s not terrible, either. Jeff continues to fill with fluid faster than they can take it off. He requires lots of rest but his spirit is one of peace and patience. We really do trust in God’s timing. Thanks to all who are praying and standing with us.

“HI Zach,

Sorry for the delay in response!  So in between your testing and getting your results, we learned that Dr. Barth, one of our recipient surgeons is leaving University of Maryland in the middle of august.  The good news is that nothing changes for you.  Dr. Lamattina and Dr. Malik are still the donor surgeons and are here  for the long term.  We have a new surgeon, Dr. Maluf, that will be taking Dr. Barth’s place on the recipient side of the surgery and as head of our liver program.  He started this week but is waiting on credentialing before he can operate.  He is coming from UVA and Tennessee with a long history in living donor liver transplant and liver transplant surgery so he will be a great addition to our team!

This will delay our ability to review your case until he is up and running, but I think that should be in the next few weeks!  I will certainly let you know when we are planning on reviewing your case, and yours will be one of the first we review and schedule if everything looks ok.”
