Mom took dad to his post-surgery check-up appointment with the neurologist yesterday. They took an x-ray and found that his neck is healing well, but won't be able to know if it fused until after a year. In the next week he will be neck-brace free, as long as he doesn't experience any pain without it! Our next care conference will be on November 23rd with the hope that the plan of him coming home on December 3rd remains the same; which we are all anxiously waiting for. He continues to progress in all areas, with the strongest in his arms and hands. Thank you all again for the continued prayers and well-wishes, we appreciate them more than you know!

We had another meeting with dad's care team yesterday. They are very pleased with his progress so far! The biggest hurdle right now is stairs, as he seems to have good and bad days with them in therapy due to the spasticity in his legs. Today he started receiving botox injections to help with the spasticity, but will take a few days to know whether they are helping or not. He is still on track to come home in 5 weeks, so we are preparing and very eager for his return :)

On Thursday, mom got to sit in on dad's therapy sessions and saw that he is progressing really well! He did some walking, going up and down stairs, and transfers. He received ankle braces that will better assist him when lifting his feet for walking and using the stairs which seem to have helped a lot. He is almost completely independent during transfers and is walking using a walker really well. Next week they plan to start using some treadmill equipment to help build up his stamina. Mom is now able to visit once a week to observe his therapy sessions and progress!

On Wednesday, it will be two weeks at Courage Kenny for dad. He's been in quarantine since arriving, so we are looking forward to having outside visits with him soon! We spoke with the social worker, physical therapist and RN from dad's care team today to go over his progress. He has been improving well, and has gotten up to 200 feet walking with a walker!! Stairs are going to be the next exercise that he will be focusing on in PT. His OT sessions have been focusing on daily living activities such as dressing, eating, and hygiene tasks. After his quarantine is done on Wednesday, he will have an increase in his therapy sessions and utilize some more of the equipment available there. Although Courage Kenny has the 30 day minimum stay, dad's care plan is looking to be around a 10 week stay instead. Dad is doing well and trying to stay in good spirits as this has been a huge adjustment, but the support and well wishes from you all has been incredibly encouraging and we can't thank you guys enough!

Had a family meeting this morning with dad's care team to discuss his progress and what the next steps will look like. Both PT and OT had only great things to say as far as his progression. Mom and I got to sit in on his morning therapy sessions today and got to see him take a couple of steps, work on standing and sitting exercises, see how far his left hand as come and watch him write his name using his left hand! Neurologist is extremely impressed with how much he has improved, as most patients with dad's injury would not have this much progression so soon. On Wednesday, dad will be transferring to Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Golden Valley to continue working on his rehab. They say his stay will be a minimum of 30 days, and then will evaluate his progress if more time is needed. We have only heard good things about Courage Kenny, so we are very hopeful and excited to see dad keep putting in the hard work and continue on his road to recovery!

It has been a full week of rehab for dad! We, but most importantly he, has noticed improvement in both strength and movements with his arms and legs. His right arm is doing very well, and his left arm is really coming along. On Thursday, with the help of hand railings and the therapists, dad took 6 steps!! Overall, lots of improvement and happy to be heading in the right direction :)

Dad was officially "discharged" from the hospital and is now on the 7th floor for rehab! He began his therapies and gets roughly two hours each of OT and PT split into 4 sessions throughout the day. OT is focusing on hand strength exercises while PT is working on standing and sitting with some assistance. His right arm/hand is still the strongest, left hand is slowly getting some strength back. His legs are improving as well, regained some flexibility and is able to help move his legs to the edge of the bed to sit up. He is also able to hold himself up when sitting on the edge of the bed pretty well. The therapies are definitely tiring but he powers through them and is very persistent!

Transfer orders have been put in to move out of ICU! Original plan was to move up to trauma floor, but nurses are pushing to be moved right to the rehab floor instead. When dad gets to the rehab floor, he will begin therapy daily for 3 hours (total, not consecutive)! Movement and feeling is improving, right arm is the strongest by far and he's able to feed himself for most of meals. He's ready to get things rolling and moving!
