Jeff’s Story

Site created on September 22, 2019

Welcome to Jeff’s Prayer Warrior CaringBridge website!

Jeff suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke (this occurs when weakened blood vessels rupture causing a brain bleed) on Friday, September 13, 2019,  while driving his children home from an orthodontist appointment.  By the grace of God, he was able to get his car safely to the side of the road.  He was taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital, but upon seeing the severity of his case, they immediately airlifted him to Banner Hospital in downtown Phoenix where he underwent immediate brain surgery to alleviate the softball-sized amount of blood that pooled near his brainstem.  They gave him about a 10% chance of even surviving the surgery.  Jeff is in critical condition and remains hospitalized in the ICU.  Jeff is fighting hard and has sporadically responded within the last few days.  He has opened his eyes, squeezed them tight and even most recently, wiggled his toes and fingers.  These are huge successes and God continues to sprinkle miracles all throughout this difficult time.  Kempa and the kids remain strong and faithful.  Your prayers, love and support remain what they need most!

In addition, a PayPal account has been set up on the Burd's behalf.  Jeff had recently changed jobs and was primarily getting paid on a commission basis and their new health insurance had not kicked in yet either.  As most of you can imagine, bills will be piling up.  This would be one area of need that if any of you  are able, a donation - big or small, would be of great use.  https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8ij4i12GeB (https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8ij4i12GeB)
(Please be sure to use this link to donate to the Burds.  If you click on the CaringBridge donation link, your money will go towards CaringBridge.)

On behalf of all of us that love this family, we appreciate your prayers, encouragement and support.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kristin Stuepfert

Hello Everyone!

It's been a while, I hope this finds you all well in the new year!

There's a few new updates to report:

Jeff had an MRI done last week and Kempa met with the neurosurgeon, who also preformed Jeff's brain surgery, to discuss the results today.  The good news is there is no new damage.  There was again no indication of why Jeff had the stroke or that he would have another one.  He told her the physical therapy during these next 2-3 years will be imperative to his recovery.

Although Jeff remains immobile, some notable gains he's made over the last few months are:
  • He continues to make more frequent and consistent "awe" sounds
  • He still has a feeding tube, but now gets to have small amounts of strawberry yogurt and applesauce for pleasure
  • Just last week, he was able to move his thumb to shuffle songs on Kempa's phone when she placed it in his hand

On Friday, Jeff will be evaluated to see if he would benefit from using a gaze-enabled speech device.  This is a device completely controlled with your eyes that then verbalizes your gaze.  Please specifically pray that this goes well and he would be able to utilize this device!

Jeff and the family still desperately need our prayers and support as this has been and continues to be a long road.  Kempa's strength, faith, love and devotion remain unshakable and she is a true inspiration to all of us around her.

Lastly, the Burd family was chosen to be the recipient of a annual fundraiser hosted by a local State Farm Insurance Agent, Nanette McClelland-Miller.  Please come and pass the event information along to anyone you think would want to attend!  It will be a fun event for us all to gather and show our support!
