On January 6, 2022 Jason tested positive for covid after being sick for a little over a week. On January 10, 2022 he started having issues breathing so we brought him to the ER. Within 1 hour of arrival he was placed on a ventilator and set to be admitted into the ICU. The doctor told us the next 3 days would determine if he was going to survive. As the third day approached he began to improve and his doctor attempted to wake him up out of sedation, I notified his doctor that his left eye wasn’t opening and he had no movement on his left side. After a CT scan, it was confirmed that he had a stroke, the next three days were spent closely monitoring him to make sure he did not have a brain bleed. He made it through the following three days and the swelling in his brain started to come down. He spent the next 8 days on the ventilator continuing to fight. On that 14th day the doctor decided he was doing well enough we could try to take him off the ventilator. He was able to stay off the ventilator for 2 days before covid started taking over his lungs again. He went back on the ventilator for the next 8 days and then thankfully was able to come off for good. After about 3 weeks in the ICU he was transferred to a step down unit.
On February 17, 2022 Jason was transferred to Memorial Hospital’s stroke rehab unit. The last 3 weeks have been filled with incredibly intense physical, occupational and speech therapy sessions around 3-4 hours each day and many ups and downs of managing new medications. There is also a heavy aspect of emotional trauma through this process that has come up, because of the loss of so many things at one time and having no control over any of it. I am happy to share that Jason will be coming home on Tuesday, March 15, 2022. He will still require 24 hour care, but at least he will be at home with his family to continue his recovery.
