Jan’s Story

Site created on January 7, 2022

On December 4th, 2021 Jan went to the hospital with stroke-like symptoms. The doctors ruled out a stroke but found a brain tumor.  On December 9th she had a craniotomy which removed nearly all of the class IV Glioblastoma. An aggressive form of brain cancer. There is no cure for brain tumors and reoccurance is common, but they can be treated.

Mom shared this with me. It really resonated with her.  Stuart Scott, the late ESPN anchor who died of cancer, once told an audience, “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.” I created this site to keep family and friends informed about her journey. We appreciate your support,  prayers, and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Kristi Phillips Zalesky

I'm trying to make a grocery list for Thanksgiving and have been looking at all of my mom's recipes. I've been trying to find two favorite recipes of hers written in her handwriting. I wanted to have one engraved on a cutting board for Nanny. But I haven't been able to find them in her writing. Only in mine. I just found one she wrote for me. Not the ones I was looking for, but one she made often enough that I could use it. I sobbed because I haven't been able to find the recipes I am looking for. Then, I sobbed when I discovered I have one handwritten recipe from her. I had no idea something so small would mean so much to me.

One week from today, I received the last text message from my mom that she was able to send. Wow, this hurts.
