Journal entry by Jeff Greene

Here's mom's obituary and a photo.  If you would like, please make a donation in her name to Trinity Hospice at trinity-hospice.com.

Jane Greene, age 97, died on March 28 at the Sterling Village skilled nursing facility.  Formerly of Leominster and Beaufort, South Carolina, Jane was born in Gardner.  She grew up in Leominster and graduated from Leominster High School where she excelled in sports.  In 1943, she married Peter Greene of Slatersville, RI, a US Marine, home on leave from the Pacific theater.  Pete decided to make the Marine Corps his career, so Jane spent her married life moving from one Marine base to another, from the East Coast to the West Coast and back.  She and Pete spent the most time in Beaufort, SC, where Pete retired.  Whenever Pete was stationed overseas, Jane assumed the duties of both parents, including playing catch with her sons.  She ran the household and demonstrated the strength and perseverance for which she was known.  While living in Beaufort, Jane volunteered for the county health department, spending many hours helping to deliver badly needed services to a poor, rural population.   In 1984, following the tragic death of her daughter Patricia in a car accident, Jane and Pete returned to Leominster to be near family.  She loved being in New England, following her beloved Bruins, and especially spending time with her sisters, and in the summer going to Rangeley, ME to be with her in-laws.  After an accident in 2016, Jane moved to Leominster Crossings and subsequently to Sterling Village.  In both facilities, her warmth, charm, and obvious concern for those around her endeared her to her fellow residents and especially to the staff.  There were many tears when she left both places.

She was predeceased by Pete, her daughter Patricia, brother John, and sisters Norma and Marylouise; and is survived by her sister Joyce Nachtrieb, sons Jeffrey (Elisabeth Townsend) and Larry (Gayle) and their children Adam and Emily; as well as Adam’s twin daughters Sophie and Toni, and Emily’s son Brian.

A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, followed by a memorial service when Covid permits.  In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Trinity Hospice at trinity-hospice.com.
